Reducing Food Waste

The way we consume food can have a major impact on the environment, especially if we are letting this food go to waste. We’ve put together an article on how you can make changes to reduce the amount of food you waste, and how you can save money in the process!

Ways to reduce food waste (and save money):

Too Good To Go: This amazing new free app lets you buy leftover food from nearby restaurants and cafés that would otherwise be chucked out, and all for a cheap price. This even includes food from the cafeteria here at The University of York — get a main and a dessert from the Piazza Restaurant for only £2!! Find out more about the app and their movement here, and make sure to download it onto your phone through the app store.

Yourcafe: This is a voluntary project where they collect and cooks surplus food from various suppliers around York, and redistribute it on their food market in order to reduce food waste! Find out more through their website here, and if you would like to get involved with them on campus then email nick.jones@york.ac.uk.

Cook as a flat: Cooking as a group is a great way to not only reduce energy, but can also lead to less food waste because as a group you are more likely to finish full packets of ingredients, rather than chucking leftovers into the bin. Help out your flatmate who still has a bit of a way to go before they can call themselves a chef, and save yourself some money in the process.

Don’t overspend when you shop: As easy as it sounds, one of the greatest causes of food waste is from buying too much food when we go shopping and not cooking it. Start out by planning out your meals and sticking to the exact amount of ingredients needed, and cut down the amount of plastic you buy by shopping at our local farmer stalls in Market Square.

Keep your leftovers: Remember all those delicious meals that you made too much of? Start putting your leftovers into box and store them in either the fridge or the freezer. The University has a public microwave you can use in the Fairhurst section of the library, so take advantage of this and save yourself money by not buying lunch when on campus!

Donate food: If you have food that you know you aren’t going to eat, then why not donate it to a local food bank? This way the food goes to people who are in need and your money isn’t wasted. You can find out about local food banks in York here.
